چکیده

Pompeii was a Roman city, destroyed and completely buried during an eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius. We have revived its past by creating a 3D model of its previous appearance and populated it with crowds of Virtual Romans. In this paper, we detail the process, based on archaeological data, to simulate ancient Pompeii life in real time. In a first step, an annotated city model is generated using procedural modelling. These annotations contain semantic data, such as land usage, building age, and window/door labels. In a second phase, the semantics are automatically interpreted to populate the scene and trigger special behaviors in the crowd, depending on the location of the characters. Finally, we describe the system pipeline, which allows for the simulation of thousands of Virtual Romans in real time.

Profit - Welcomed or Disdained by Ancient Romans ?

"Salve Lucrum," an inscription embedded in the threshold of Casa di Sirico, a large mansion in Pompeii, raises an interesting question. "Salve" is a term used by the Romans as a greeting; thus the phrase can be translated as "Hail Profit!" This greeting can be contrasted to the view, suggested by some contemporaneous literature, that the Roman elite distanced themselves from commercial activity...

Populating Virtual Cities with Diverse Physiology Driven Crowds of Intelligent Agents

When conducting archaeological excavations of ancient cities, 3D reconstruction has become an important mechanism of documenting the findings and showing the results to general public in an accessible way. Most such reconstructions, however, mainly focus on visualising buildings and artefacts, while rarely simulating the actual people that populated the reconstructed city and aspects of their e...

Interactive Techniques for Populating Large Virtual Cities

For many applications, exploring empty virtual cities is not sufficient: streets and squares need to be populated by crowds of virtual humans. This position paper addresses the problem of generating such crowds when the scale of the city prevents the use of standard simulation methods. We first present the concept of crowd patches and review their advantages and drawbacks for animating large cr...

Greco-Roman Music in Context; Bringing Sound and Music to Virtual Pompeii

We are advancing humanities education by learning how to recreate ancient Greek and Roman music, and place it in its architectural and cultural context. Specifically, we put new musical compositions and existing pieces in our 3D computer graphic model of the Theater District of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The music is (virtually) located at the grand Theatre, the Temple of Athena, and ot...
